I got to travel to another
village last week for a teacher training camp.
There is an organization in Thailand that trains teachers to be trainers
of other teachers who want to host an English camp for students. My only experience with an English camp for
students is that they are fun and active and schools like them.
We will have one in my
village in December.
Emily and Nolan are one of
the married couples in our group. Emily
is a teacher and Nolan is a community development person. They live in the same province that I do
along with Faith, another trainer at the camp.
We had a large group of Thai teachers who attended. We gave sessions on Reading and Writing
activities and Speaking and Listening activities. The sessions were lots of fun as the teachers
learned about the activities by doing them. One of the pictures is of someone
drawing a dog, one instruction at a time.
So first he drew and labeled the dog’s legs, them a head, tail, body,
eyes, etc. We had activities where
students match a question with an answer, play charades, compete to “slap” the
correct word first. They are all
designed to be fun, participatory, and English based.
The school cooks made food
and we all ate a delicious lunch together.
It was fun to talk with the teachers both in the classroom and outside
the classroom. They always tell me I am
very strong.
We spent the night coming
back with Emily’s co-teacher, Pla, at her home near Nongkai. She has taken an old Thai home, added on and
put in lots of modern conveniences. Her parents
and her niece live with her and we watched a Thai ghost story series. I really liked it and may watch it at my
home.
At this point, I have to say
each new experiences gives me more insight into Thai culture and I feel like I
still don’t really understand it, but as always the people I meet are friendly
and generous and I enjoy it.
