End of Term

I knew our school semester was over sometime in October, but an exact date was hard to pin down.  The end of term here is full of activity.  First, the last week in September there was a competition day at our school for several surrounding schools. The campus was full of students and teachers.  The competitions included all subjects and several students displayed their projects.  I think we had class 2 days that week.  The following week, there was again maybe 2 days of school and competition moved to the district level.  We all went to a high school in Phonpisai where the students competed and the teachers judged.  At this event, there were many vendors, clothing, toys, food, sunglasses, and some performances by students in theater and dance.
Then at one school we had a learning camp day.  The students were divided into grades 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6.  In each of those groups there were 5 smaller groups, so 10 all together.  The groups rotated through several “classes” which were mostly fun.  We taught body parts in English and had different activities for the younger and older kids.  There were then 2 days where the students were tested in all their subjects. On the first Friday in October, all the teachers from Ban Serm school went to Nongkhai for a closing the term dinner.  Three teachers were given awards and one new teacher was welcomed to the school.  We had a big meal and sang Karaoke.  Finally, on Monday grades K, 1, 2, and 3 went on a field trip to a dinosaur display in Udon and we visited 2 temples in 4 large tour buses.  The dinosaur in Udon was made in Japan for 2,000,000 baht.  It was fabulous, lots of roaring and movement.  Some of the kinder kids were scared, but mostly they all loved it.
Teachers will work this week getting grades posted and performing their other various jobs at school.  Then we are off until Nov. 1st.
