I was with about 30 Thai English teachers Thurs.,
Fri. and Sat morning. We had copies of
last year’s ONET test (standardized test for all Thai students). We went through the questions to identify the
kinds of skills needed to answer correctly.
The group was divided by grade level, elementary teachers together and
high school teachers together. I have
been in a Teacher Training camp with most of these people and they are all
very, very good at English. I was a
“consultant” that they didn't really need, but I tried to participate.
Like teachers at home, these teachers work very
hard. Not only are they responsible for
their classes, they all have another job of some sort at the school. They take
care of finances, a school store, professional development, school secretary,
ordering supplies, and other duties. One
of the teachers here works at a school for orphans. It is huge and the staff are all teachers and
“parents” to the kids at their school. I
am hoping to visit there soon.
These teachers work hard, but they also have
fun. There were breaks for coffee,
lunch, picture taking and one quick shopping trip. After dinner, there was Karaoke and conversation
and more food.
I am lucky to be in a district with an awesome
director who is very dynamic and proactive with her staff. She promotes collaboration and professional
development and she has had several Peace Corps volunteers over the years.
