Thai Parade for Asanha Bucha

This holiday is one of Theravada Buddhism’s most important festivals. It is when Buddha gave his first sermon and is not only the first structured discourse given by the Buddha after his enlightenment, it also contains the essence of all his subsequent teaching.  The parade was in Phonpisai.  My friend Faith and I went with the area director of English teachers to her neighborhood temple later.  It is a holiday for giving to the monks and they begin their Lent season on August 3rd.
Lots of pictures, it was a very visual event and a 4 day weekend for schools.
Before the parade began, I asked for a photo and ended up in it
Children dressed in traditional farmer outfits

Spraying the street before barefoot dancers come through

Dancers leaving the area with their umbrellas

Thai dancers.  These dances are really lovely, graceful, slow and sweet
